Fireworks Safety
Fireworks are a blast when you give them a little respect. Here is how to keep the show fun and everybody's fingers and eyebrows right where they belong. When in doubt, ask us at the counter - we are always glad to walk you through it.
Before You Light
- Read the label and the directions on every item before you light it.
- Set up on a hard, flat, level surface - concrete or asphalt beats grass. On grass, lay down a board first.
- Pick a wide-open spot, well clear of houses, cars, dry brush, and anything that can catch fire.
- Keep a bucket of water and a hose or fire extinguisher within arm's reach.
- Wear eye protection, and aim so the wind carries smoke and debris away from the crowd.
Who Lights Them
- A sober adult lights the fireworks. Always - no exceptions.
- Never light anything after drinking or anything else that slows you down.
- Keep children and pets back at a safe distance - they should watch the show, never light or handle anything.
While You Light
- One item at a time. Light the tip of the fuse with a punk or a long lighter, then walk away.
- Never put any part of your body over a firework, and never look down the tube.
- Never hold a lit firework in your hand, and never throw or point one at anybody.
- Give yourself room: about 25 to 40 feet back for ground items, and 225 to 300 feet for aerials.
Duds & Cleanup
- If something does not go off, leave it be. Never try to relight a dud.
- Wait a full five minutes, then soak it in water before you go near it.
- Soak every spent firework in water before it goes in a metal trash can.
- Store whatever is left in a cool, dry spot - never in a pocket.
